The Society for Children and Youth of
BC (SCY) is very pleased to announce the appointment of Anne O’Neil as the
Society’s new Executive Director, effective February 9, 2009.
As the Executive Director, Anne will
be responsible for the leadership and management of the Society. She will be
responsible for operational oversight, building and maintaining strong
partnerships, organizational financial sustainability, and working
collaboratively with the Board of Directors to carry out the Society’s core
mission and strategic plans.
Anne has an extensive background in
law, policy, fundraising, and community development. She has a strong passion
for social justice and working with others to create stronger, healthier
communities for all. Anne began her
career practicing law in Nova
Scotia, mainly representing survivors of physical
and sexual abuse in institutional settings. She also has experience in
criminal, family, and child protection law.
For the past seven years Anne has
been working in the non-profit sector in BC, mainly to advance the interests
of those living with addictions, poverty, and mental and/or physical
disabilities.
Over the next two months, Tina Tam,
SCY’s current Acting Executive Director, will remain in her role to
facilitate the transition. Tina has successfully fulfilled her two-year
mandate to focus on organizational development and strategic planning. She
has been instrumental in defining the new Executive Director position and
facilitated the successful recruitment process. Tina’s term with SCY ends on
March 27, 2009.
This is an exciting year of growth
for SCY! 2009 marks the Society’s 35th anniversary and the 20th
anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Under Anne’s
leadership, SCY will focus on expanding our involvement in child rights and
community collaboration.
