Past Accomplishments

  • Conducted a survey of BC organizations to ascertain level of knowledge and use of the UN Convention. 1995
  • Produced information kits to meet needs identified in the above survey. Four selected topic areas: child abuse and neglect, youth justice, play and recreation, and the child's right to be heard and considered. 1996 - 1997
  • Held conferences and community-based workshops on children's rights and selected topics in relation to the UN Convention. 1997
  • Developed and supported youth presentations in schools. 1997 - 1998
  • Created a four-star rating system for assessing legislative compliance with the Convention and applied this to all relevant BC statutes and selected pieces of federal law (UN Convention on the Rights of the Child: Does Domestic Legislation Measure Up?). 1998
  • Produced a special issue of FOCUS on Children and Youth newsletter commemorating the 10th anniversary of the UN Convention. 1999
  • Encouraged other provinces to use the model for assessing legislative compliance, resulting in its application by researchers in Ontario and Alberta. 1999
  • Adapted the model for use in assessing the compliance of policy (UN Convention on the Rights of the Child: A Model for Assessing Policy Compliance). 2001
  • Developed guidelines for writing new policy that complies with the Convention (UN Convention on the Rights of the Child: Guidelines for Policy Development). 2001
  • Produced a supplement of background information on the Convention, based on UNICEF's Implementation Handbook for the Convention on the Rights of the Child, to assist those developing or assessing policy. 2001
  • Developed a step-by-step guide for using the model for assessing legislative compliance (UN Convention on the Rights of the Child: A Model for Assessing Legislative Compliance). 2001
  • Applied the model for assessing legislative compliance to the proposed secure care legislation in BC (Compliance of BC's Secure Care Act with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child). 2001
  • Applied the model for assessing legislative compliance to the new federal youth justice legislation (Compliance of Canada's Youth Criminal Justice Act with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child). 2002
